This lockdown has blessed us all with some personal care time for ourselves. Therefore, my sister and I tried out a variety of DIY natural facemasks under the guidance of our mother and I have decided to share some of the most instantly effective ones from the list we tried. Don’t worry about your skin texture as although sisters by blood, we have different skin types. So I would be recommending the facemasks according to what suites oily, normal or dry skin. Take a look at these worthwhile facemasks with ingredients that are definitely available in every Indian kitchen:
Multani Mitti Mask
This mask works miracles on skin with pimples and pigmentation differences on the face. Multani mitti is a cooling agent and also has some medicinal properties to treat skin rashes, sunburns and tanning. Although multani mitti is an ingredient that is not available readily in your kitchens, you might ask your gardener or buy multani mitti online. I use and recommend natural multani mitti.
Skin Type:
- Oily Skin
- Skin with Acne
Ingredients :
- Multani Mitti
- Rose Water
- Potato Juice
- lemon
Process:
Take half a cup of powdered multani mitti and add rose water to it to give it a muddy texture. Now grate a potato and squeeze out the juice of the grated potato into the muddy mixture, add 2-3 drops of lemon and then mix using a spoon. Your DIY multani mitti mask is ready. Apply it and keep it till the mask completely dries off. Be careful not to move your facial organs too much once it’s dry and wash it immediately, as cracks in the mask may cause wrinkles. Use it consistently for a week and see the results for yourself. This mask can be stored in a refrigerator if potato juice is not used. However, you might need to add rose water to get the muddy texture again as it hardens after you take it out of the fridge.
Turmeric(Haldi) mask, commonly known as the Ubtan Face Mask
This mask has two versions for two different skin types. If you have normal skin, you might try any of the following according to your preference and skin inclination.
Turmeric is known to have medicinal properties and anti-oxidants that are good for the skin. It helps to revive the skin and bring a natural glow to your face. We also use gram flour (besan) which contains zinc to stop the eruption of acne on your skin.
NOTE: This mask may have allergic reactions to some as turmeric or gram flour does not suit you many-a-times. Try this mask first by applying it on a patch of your skin, other than your face and see if it suit you. If it does, then go ahead and get ready for that glowing, healthy skin
For Oily skin:
Ingredients:
- Turmeric
- Gram Flour
- Honey
- Yoghurt
- Rosewater
- Lemon
Process:
Take two tablespoons of gram flour into a bowl. Add one to half tablespoon turmeric, as per your preference after trial. Now squeeze 1/4th lemon into it. Add a teaspoon of honey into it. Next, add 2 teaspoons of yoghurt and finally 5-6 drops of rosewater. Mix it thoroughly until no lumps are left in the mixture. Now apply the mask and keep it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse it off using water and you can yourself judge the difference in your skin.
For Dry Skin:

Take two tablespoons of gram flour into a bowl. Add one or a half tablespoon of turmeric, as per your preference after trial. Now squeeze 1/4th lemon into it. Add a teaspoon of honey into it. Next, add 2 teaspoons of milk ( a natural moisturizer ) and finally 5-6 drops of rosewater. Mix it thoroughly until no lumps are left in the mixture. Now apply the mask and keep it on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse it off using water and voila, say hello to healthy, glowing skin.
The Coffee Scrub
The coffee scrub is quick to make and highly recommended face mask for glowing-nourished skin. Besides this, coffee is also an anti-cellulite agent, hence tightening your skin, and removing puffiness from under the eyes. This mask is a must for those who look for anti-ageing creams and masks.
Skin Type:
- Dry
- Normal
- Oily
Ingredients:
- Coffee
- Honey
Process:
Take a tablespoon of coffee and add a teaspoon of honey into it. Mix it well and apply it on your skin using your hands. Keep it for 15-20 minutes. Then rinse it using water slowly, by rubbing the coffee off from your face using water. It cannot be stored in a hot place, therefore make it as and when you want to use it.
Rice-tomato scrub
This scrub is a 2 minute DIY but is highly effective when it comes to getting the perfect glow. Rice has a few sun-protecting agents like ferulic acid and allantoin, which help protect skin from tanning and act as a sunscreen for the face. Rice also has a coarse texture which acts as an exfoliating agent, removing dead skin cells from your face, renewing your skin. Tomato is a rich source of potassium and vitamin C, giving your skin a naturally radiating glow.
Skin types:
- Oily Skin
- Normal Skin
- Dry Skin(Use of moisturizer is a must after the application)
Ingredients:
- Rice flour
- Tomato
Process:
Take 2 tablespoons of rice flour in a container. Slice a tomato. Then take a slice of the tomato and dip it in the rice flour until its fully covered with its particles. Rub it on your skin as if you are applying a scrub and use a new slice every time you feel there is no juice left in the tomato. Keep scrubbing and changing slices for 5-10 minutes and then rinse it off with water. You can see immediate after-effects on your skin.
